To support our games department, we are looking for a motivated Game Designer (f/m/d) for the Game Design of a new project on a freelance basis, based in Cologne. 

btf GmbH is a production company for film, television and video games with offices in Cologne and Berlin. Our portfolio includes numerous award-winning projects in the fields of film, television, games and art.

With our new project we continue down our path to becoming an independent games developer. 

After the success of our video game „Trüberbrook“, we are now starting work on a 2D platformer in the „Metroidvania“ genre, amongst others. The game is currently in an early stage of development.

The tasks

  • Elaboration of the game design / level design for the new project
  • Fine-tuning of jumping, combat and interaction mechanics
  • Development of game-relevant mechanics that provide the player with fluidity and playability
  • Create varied platformer level design
  • Design and development of puzzle elements and rooms

The requirements

  • Stimulate player interest through appropriate mechanics and well-placed surprises, which continue to grow over the course of the game
  • Scaling levels and level design with jump and dash mechanics in mind
  • Optimization of level selection and number for the different biomes
  • Ability to combine story and gameplay with an eye towards optimal pacing

Nice-to-have:

  • Familiarity with genre representatives like „Hollow Knight“, „Ori and the Blind Forest“, etc.
  • Knowledge in other areas of game development

Zur Unterstützung unseres Game Departments suchen wir ab sofort eine:n motivierte:n Game Designer:in (w/m/d) für die Entwicklung eines neuen Projektes auf Freelance Basis mit Einsatzort in Köln.

  • Ausarbeitung des Game Designs / Level Designs für das neue Projekt
  • Feintuning der Sprung-, Kampf- und Interaktionsmechaniken
  • Entwicklung spielrelevanter Mechaniken die dem Spieler Flow und Spaß bereiten
  • Abwechslungsreiches Platformer Level Design erstellen
  • Konzeption und Entwicklung von Puzzle-Elementen und -Räumen

Die Voraussetzungen

  • Spieler-Interesse durch entsprechende Mechaniken und platzierter Überraschungen anregen und über den Spielverlauf weiter steigen lassen
  • Skalierung von Leveln und Level-Design mit Blick auf Sprung- und Dash Mechaniken
  • Optimierung der Levelauswahl und -anzahl für die verschiedenen Biome
  • Fähigkeit Story und Gameplay mit Blick auf optimales pacing zu verbinden

Nice-to-have:

  • Vertrautheit mit Genre-Vertretern wie “Hollow Knight”, “Ori and the Blind Forest”, etc.
  • Kenntnisse in anderen Bereichen der Games Entwicklung
