Fishean Studio is a new VR company that aims to create realistic VR experiences telling the stories of people from marginalized groups. Our premier project and winner of The Big Indie Pitch, Our America, is a branching Narrative VR experience about being Black in America. The story follows a father and son on their way to school and the events they encounter along the way. Our project is looking for a 3D character artist to finish character models. This would include modeling, texturing, and adding hair to the character models used in the game based off of existing concept art. This is a remote 1-2 month contract position. Ability to animate may result in an extended contract.

Responsibilities

  • Model and texture 2 realistic human characters based off of existing concept art and design that capture the cultural nuances of the characters including hair and skin
  • Prepare the character models for character animators to rig and animate
  • Work with the creative director to create and design character aesthetics to fulfill the narrative vision and artistic direction
  • Work with the designers and programmers to ensure that the models look visually appealing in Unity and VR
  • Offer and receive criticism and critique equally well to maintain and elevate our team’s quality bar
  • You can use your preferred choice of software for these tasks as long as they are functional in Unity
  • Creates high-resolution models, low-resolution models, UV layouts, textures and materials for characters, weapons and props.
  • Optimizes models and textures to ensure quality and performance.
  • Integrates and checks character assets in context in the game to identify scale and design issues.
  • Assist with rendering and integration of 3D assets into Unity3D

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Art or related field, or equivalent work experience
  • 1-2 years of professional experience as a 3D Character artist 
  • Experience with creating 3D character models for video games with a high level of realism.
  • Experience with working with Unity3D
  • Able to create and texture realistic, unique, and highly detailed 3D human models for use in Unity
  • Able to follow or refine existing art direction to meet narrative and gameplay vision
  • Be flexible with making edits and revisions based on gameplay requirements
  • Online portfolio demonstrating work of high level of realism
  • Link to a demo reel with description of your work per shot
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent time management and work discipline.
  • Understanding of Photoshop, Maya, 3D Studio Max, Mudbox, and ZBrush (or equivalent)
  • Understanding of generating normal maps from high poly models
  • Understanding of Unity shaders
  • Understanding of Perforce
  • Excellent foundations skills, including composition, design, and color theory
  • The ability to work with detailed concept art or reference art/ materials
  • Knowledge of human anatomy
  • Strong traditional painting skills and the ability to create models and shaders for photorealistic to style

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experienced with modelling and texturing for VR
  • Knowledge or experience with rigging and/or animating character models(including facial animation)
  • Knowledgeable about game production pipeline and game industry trends
  • Understanding of games as a storytelling medium
  • Passion for video games
