Although no software is perfect, we strive to ensure our players have a great experience when playing our games, and we recognize that efficient and effective testing is critical to the success of our teams and products. Therefore, we are looking for high-potential candidates to join our in-house Test team. Although we prefer candidates to have some amount of previous experience as a Tester, we are open to junior and intermediate candidates for this role.

The ideal candidate will have some previous experience testing interactive entertainment software (games) across multiple platforms, including PC, Mac, and consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch). The most important thing is that you be organized, conscientious, self-driven, able to carry out strict and rigorous multi-staged processes, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Successful testing requires a combination of structured analysis and creative problem-solving, as you work to identify the difference between the development team’s intention for the game, and the player’s actual experience, so that the two align perfectly by the time the software goes out the door.

We work in a highly iterative environment on premium “games as a service” titles with a very high expectation for quality, and therefore we are constantly releasing updates to our games, across multiple platforms and for millions of players around the world. In your work as a Tester, you will collaborate in a fast-paced environment, providing support for all current and future feature testing according to Test Plans provided by the Test Director or Leads. This may extend to performance testing, testing for build stability, or providing test support to the development team for specific game features, content, or development tools.

You will work heavily in JIRA, logging and evaluating bugs, communicating feedback in well-written bug reports, testing multiple platforms, and often managing a range of priorities, so it’s important that you are organized and can communicate status and provide feedback effectively.

Hinterland is a no-crunch studio with high expectations for the quality of the people on our team and the experiences we deliver to our players, so you need to be passionate about achieving quality and working efficiently without compromising your own health and well-being. This requires good planning, good communication, and a high degree of accountability for your work, which in our remote-first environment needs to be done very autonomously.

Your Impact:

Through your efforts, we will release better quality software ensuring better experiences for our players. They will appreciate our efforts, and this will increase their feelings of support and loyalty towards our studio. You will also preserve the team’s vision for the game and help ensure that the software in our player’s hands behaves as intended.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Carefully test software across a range of platforms, and log issues using our internal JIRA database.
  • Support the development of multiple game projects through daily testing and great communication.
  • Write detailed bugs according to internal standards, while producing a range of qualitative feedback and reports when requested.
  • Execute test plans, perform ad hoc testing, and compliance testing when needed.
  • Provide test support for the development of game features, and development tools.
  • Review game documentation and interact with the project development team to better understand the game’s intentions.
  • Be player-focused in your testing, and team-focused in your approach.

Your Skills & Qualifications:

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience using bug database software (ideally, JIRA).
  • Experience using standard documentation software.
  • Experience in general testing methodology.
  • Ability to work autonomously, and take accountability for your own work.
  • Desire to collaborate closely within a Test team, and work closely with game developers across a variety of disciplines.
  • Strong sense of responsibility to our players, and a deep desire to ensure they have the best experience possible.
  • Pride in the importance of a Tester’s contribution to successful game development, and a sense of wanting to preserve the studio’s good reputation with our player base.
  • Comfort and familiarity with industry-standard testing approaches and terminology.

Extra Consideration:

  • Previous interactive software testing experience in a live-services, premium games-as-a-service context.
  • Previous experience with console testing, including the validation of platform requirements.

This remote-first flexibility is balanced with a physical studio in Vancouver, which is optionally available (COVID-permitting) to anyone on the team who wants to use it. We strengthen our team bond through offsite retreats, where we focus on creating memories together. We feel this balance of remote and in-person opportunities creates the strongest alloy for our culture.

We encourage everyone on the team to find balance between work and life, and never ask anyone to compromise one for the other. We are a No Crunch studio. We have high expectations of the level of commitment and the quality of the work done by our team, and trust everyone to manage their own schedule and workload. We offer a generous bundle of benefits and vacation time, and strongly encourage our team members to enjoy the 5+ weeks of paid time off we offer annually. We are a family-first studio and offer a range of tools to support our team and their growing families.
