Level Design exists at the crux between gaming psychology and art, representing the delicate balance between gameplay needs, narrative elements, intuitive world logic, and constant immersion.

We're looking for a senior LD who has walked the walk, and is looking to embrace the challenge of balancing our unique gameplay mechanics with the freedom of building levels within the mind.

Much of the work involves overhauling prototype levels where opportunities for improvement and inspiration for change are both in ample supply. Great ideas can still impact the overall game flow and narrative, so it's important to embrace design fundamentals but shed any tendency for adhering too closely to realism for realism's sake.

We're looking for an experienced designer who can hit the ground running and show their prowess through expert blocking and the organic extension of our aesthetics, themes, and in-world metaphors.

Our goal is to blend narrative-heavy moments with action-oriented exploration.

Strong candidates will receive additional materials to provide deeper context and a clearer picture of what is desired from this role.

Unity is our chosen engine, but experience in Unreal is also welcome. We'd prefer that you've shipped at least one title in the 3rd-person action adventure or action-platformer genre, but would consider a candidate with strong evidence of world-building in their portfolio. We look forward to hearing from you!

LOGISTICS:

The role is remote in nature, available inside or outside the US, and begins with a 1-month contract of 10-20 hours per week to ascertain quality and output.

Please visit our website or social channels for more information on the studio and its culture. We look forward to hearing from you.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Immerse yourself in the game's world
  • Review prototype levels for context
  • Receive briefing on high-level objectives & mechanics
  • Work to overhaul specific levels/scenes as necessary
  • Provide high-level block-outs and rough terrain topography to support them
  • Work in tandem with the Game Director and other team members to iterate on the level design(s)
  • Respect the balance between gameplay needs and narrative ambitions
  • Communicate and collaborate with the Game Director or other team members respectfully and in a timely manner

WHAT YOU’LL NEED:

  • A portfolio that shows relevant LD experience, creative design, and mastery of design fundamentals
  • Ample experience with Unity and/or Unreal and relevant tools
  • Equal parts professionalism and passion

COMPENSATION

Hourly rates are negotiable depending on experience.

TERM

  • 1-Month Probationary period consisting of 10-20 hours per week
  • Starting date is March 2023
