Land & Sea is an independent games studio from developers of the critically acclaimed Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey. We’re looking for a highly skilled and experienced programmer to play a key part in the development of our all-new original IP, as well as supporting our existing Alto titles.

We are a small team crafting meaningful, highly polished experiences. We aim to work  sustainably, with flexible working hours, zero crunch, and providing a healthy and supportive environment for our team.

This role offers a great deal of autonomy and would suit an experienced programmer who enjoys working in a collaborative, cross-discipline environment. The ideal candidate will work confidently across multiple aspects of our upcoming project, including systems architecture, tools development, gameplay programming, optimisation and platform integration.

This role is remote, however due to time zone overlap requirements, candidates from the UK and Europe are preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform core game, system and platform programming tasks, operating as one of the key players in the development and support of our original titles.
  • Use your experience to highlight key areas for improvement, as well as guide the continued development of our games and related pipelines.
  • Develop tools to help improve the efficiency of our team.
  • Weigh in on non-technical design and creative exploration. As a small team we like to ensure every team member has a stake in the creative process.

Requirements

  • Experience in commercial game programming roles.
  • Extensive experience working in the Unity game engine.
  • Fluent in C#.
  • Be a proponent for good software design and architecture.
  • Personal initiative: ability to make key decisions without guidance when necessary.
  • A solid understanding of modern optimisation techniques for mobile and console titles.
  • Excellent communication, creative collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Experience authoring development and testing tools in Unity.
  • An interest and willingness to engage in the game design process.

Bonus Points

  • Team or product lead experience (in any role).
  • Experience with automated build/ testing and CI systems, such as Jenkins.
  • Experience in C++ or working with other game engines.
  • A passion for managing/supporting/mentoring your fellow engineers.
  • Experience with working with dynamic audio systems and middleware (such as Wwise and Fmod).

Benefits of working with us

  • Flexibility in working hours.
  • Wellness payout of £150 per quarter - to be spent on your personal health.
  • Training budget of £1000 per year - to be spent toward your professional development, including industry events, conferences, classes and more.
  • Two exploration days per month to be used for upskilling or exploring new project concepts/experiments.

Additional Details

  • Location: Remote (UK/Europe preferred)
  • Hours: Full time, 40h p/w
  • Duration: Permanent employment for UK applicants / 12-month contract for international hires
  • Current Team Size: 5
  • Salary: £41,000 - £62,000 p/a based on experience
About
Land & Sea

Land & Sea is a small, independent games studio founded with the goal of creating artful, hand-crafted experiences that resonate with a wide audience.

The studio is formed of the same BAFTA-nominated development team behind the critically acclaimed Alto’s Adventure & Alto’s Odyssey.

We’re hard at work on our next title, as well as supporting our previous titles in the Alto series.

Working With Us

Land & Sea is looking for talented people to join the team and help us craft new games, as well as support our existing titles. If you're interested in working with us, please apply!

We encourage you to submit an application, even if you don’t feel you meet all of our requirements. We care more about working with people who want to help us craft artful, accessible experiences and pride themselves on being a joy to work with than ticking all the boxes.

We also strongly encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply – as a new studio, we’re committed to building a supportive, inclusive work environment from day one.

As a team, we seek to prioritise wellbeing as a core tenet of our development process. Launching a game can be a hugely rewarding experience, but it is just a passing moment in time. We believe that feeling happy, supported and capable in our everyday lives will allow us to do our best work, and create truly meaningful games.

Please apply using the button below and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible!

Additional Information

Land & Sea is based in the South West of England, however, we are a remote studio. While we are open to applicants from around the world, we prefer to keep our team closer to home, with applicants from the United Kingdom and Europe preferred. However, if you feel you meet the role requirements and don’t mind ensuring your hours reasonably overlap with ours, please apply, wherever you are!

For applicants based within the United Kingdom, we are able to offer a full-time employment contract. For applicants outside of the UK, we are able to offer the role as a 12-month, full-time contract position. In both cases the role will remain remote and includes a high degree of autonomy and flexibility, which is critical to us as a small, cross discipline team.

While we target a 40 hour work week, we are able to accommodate a range of working hours as long as reasonable overlap can be established each day for production meetings and critical problem solving.

Land & Sea is a small team of creatives crafting meaningful, highly polished experiences. Our vision entails sustainable work practices including, realistic work hours, zero crunch, and a focus on developing games that add value to the lives of our players. We are an inclusive studio that seeks to provide a healthy and supportive work environment for our team.

We’d love to hear from you, so please apply if you are interested in this role! You will hear from us if your application has been successful in the coming weeks!

Kind regards

– The Land & Sea Team

Our Next Project - Alongside the reveal of the studio in September of 2020 we shared a teaser image of our first original title unde the Land & Sea banner. While we are not quite ready to share more, we feel this title is best described as an accessible, coming-of-age folktale set against an ancient pastoral landscape.

Our goal is to ensure this title encapsulates the themes and values we seek to embody at Land & Sea. We can’t wait to show the world what we’ve been working on!
