We’re looking for an experienced programmer to join our small, but gently expanding team. With a growing collection of existing Alto titles — including the recently announced Alto’s Odyssey: The Lost City on Apple Arcade — we’re looking to bring someone in that is keen to play a critical part in the future of the Alto series and the studio as a whole.

As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with and report to Harry, the original creator and lead developer of the Alto series. Additionally, you will work closely with our senior engineer to fulfill the technical requirements of servicing our games and our producer to identify and resolve challenges in the upkeep and development of all things Alto.

You will proactively navigate technical challenges in our development environment, using your experience to highlight key areas for improvement, as well as guide the continued optimisation of these titles and related game development pipelines.

You are an expert in your craft and will be able to provide critical technical guidance to all members of our team, regardless of their technical background.

In this role, you will:

  • Perform core game, system, and platform programming tasks, operating as one of the key players in the development and support of the Alto titles.
  • Leverage your game development experience to expand the knowledge and technical abilities of the team around you.
  • Develop tools to help improve the efficiency of our production pipelines.
  • Weigh in on non-technical design and creative exploration. As a small team, we like to ensure every team member has a stake in the creative process.
  • Over time we foresee this role growing to lead the engineering efforts on the Alto Series, helping to lead maintenance and live ops/content updates for our previous titles.

  • Experience in commercial game programming roles.
  • Extensive experience working in the Unity game engine.
  • Fluent in C#
  • Be a proponent for good software design and architecture.
  • Personal initiative: ability to make key decisions without guidance when necessary.
  • Working knowledge of the best optimisation practices, especially for mobile. Knowledge
  • Excellent communication, creative collaboration and teamwork skills.
  • Experience authoring development and testing tools in Unity.
  • An interest and willingness to engage in the game design process.
  • A keen interest in nurturing the Alto series into the future.

Working With Us

Land & Sea is looking for talented people to join the team and help us craft new games, as well as support our existing titles. If you're interested in working with us, please apply!

We encourage you to submit an application, even if you don’t feel you meet all of our requirements. We care more about working with people who want to help us craft artful, accessible experiences and pride themselves on being a joy to work with than ticking all the boxes.

We also strongly encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply – as a new studio, we’re committed to building a supportive, inclusive work environment from day one.

As a team, we seek to prioritise wellbeing as a core tenet of our development process. Launching a game can be a hugely rewarding experience, but it is just a passing moment in time. We believe that feeling happy, supported and capable in our everyday lives will allow us to do our best work, and create truly meaningful games.

We're currently hiring artists, designers, and programmers. You can view (and share) all of our open roles here.

Additional Information

Land & Sea is based in the South West of England, however, this position is remote. While we are open to applicants from around the world, we prefer to keep our team closer to home, so applicants from the United Kingdom and Europe are preferred. However, if you meet the above requirements and don’t mind ensuring your hours reasonably overlap with ours most days, please apply, wherever you are!

For applicants based within the United Kingdom, we are able to offer a full-time employment contract. For applicants outside of the UK, we are able to offer the role as a 12-month, full-time contract. In both cases, the role will remain remote long term and includes a high degree of autonomy and flexibility, which is critical to us as a small, cross-discipline team.

While we target a 40 hour work week, we are able to accommodate a range of working hours as long as reasonable overlap can be established each day for production meetings and critical problem-solving.

Land & Sea is a small team of creatives crafting meaningful, highly polished experiences. Our vision entails sustainable work practices including, realistic work hours, zero crunch, and a focus on developing games that add value to the lives of our players. We are an inclusive studio that seeks to provide a healthy and supportive work environment for our team.

While we work closely with Snowman — our partner on the Alto series — we are two distinct studios. In this role, you will be directly working for Land & Sea but regular collaboration with Snowman being built into the process of our continued support of the Alto series.

We’d love to hear from you, so please apply using our application form if you are interested in this role! You will hear from our producer Jair McBain, or our hiring partner at Amiqus if your application has been successful in the coming weeks.

Kind regards
– The Land & Sea Team
