We are now open to applications for an experienced game designer to join our team! This role will play an integral part in the development of an all-new original IP, as well as supporting the existing Alto titles. This includes content updates for the recently released Apple Arcade title; Alto’s Odyssey: The Lost City.

Our ideal candidate approaches design as a discipline, bearing in mind the player experience first and foremost, through all stages of the development process. You are able to confidently integrate into existing tools and production pipelines while leveraging your experience to help improve the development environment and formalise our design practices.

You are someone who prides yourself on effective and efficient design solutions. You embrace minimalist sensibilities and subscribe to a “design by subtraction” mentality. Less is more. You are not afraid to reject ideas and relish the opportunity to reduce scope, in favour of preserving clarity and maximising the strengths of a small team.

You are someone who cares about details, no matter how small. You take pride in your work and hold yourself to a higher standard than most, paying as much attention to the finer details, as you do the bigger picture. You welcome constructive feedback and work well within a highly iterative game development process. You thrive in a self-directed, autonomous environment and are comfortable wearing many hats in a small, cross-discipline team.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the design and implementation of level designs, puzzles, AI behavior, user interface layouts and environment greyboxes inside the Unity game engine.
  • Create and maintain documentation such as design outlines, diagrams and visual mockups to help the team understand and execute on a shared design vision.
  • Think holistically about the overall user experience of our games, ensuring they are as clear, accessible and enjoyable as possible.
  • Design and help to implement feature and content updates for the Alto series.
  • Leverage your experience working on video game projects to expand the knowledge and abilities of the team around you.
  • Help us identify bottlenecks and implement key improvements to our design pipelines.
  • Weigh in on all areas of creative development, such as narrative, art and audio design. As a small team and as such like to ensure every team member has a stake in the creative decision-making process.

Requirements

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong sense of independence and autonomy.
  • Technically minded, and detail-oriented.
  • Confidence and ability to make key decisions and identify where to be helpful, even with limited guidance.
  • Ability to collaborate well, and stay sensitive to the needs of the team.
  • Highly motivated and adaptable, comfortable working across a variety of mediums and contexts.
  • You are an experienced and deep thinking game designer who can work across a wide range of design disciplines, including:
  • Gameplay/feature design
  • Level/environment design
  • Goal/Achievement design
  • Narrative design
  • User experience
  • Ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of modern game design practices by drawing comparisons between contemporary titles.
  • Experience evaluating and realising design ideas in the Unity game engine.
  • Experience communicating design concepts through game development adjacent tools where appropriate, such as the Adobe Suite, and 3D software such as Maya, 3DS Max or Blender.
  • Experience working on at least one shipped title.

Bonus points

The points below are strictly bonuses, therefore we encourage you to apply, even if you don’t feel you meet any of them! We learn on the job every day and will support you to do the same.

  • Team or product lead experience (in any role).
  • You have contributed toward multiple released titles on any modern platform.
  • Experience working in other modern game engines other than Unity (Unreal, Godot, Lumberyard, Game Marker)
  • A passion for managing/supporting/mentoring your fellow team members, regardless of role.

Working With Us

Land & Sea is looking for talented people to join the team and help us craft new games, as well as support our existing titles. If you're interested in working with us, please apply!

We encourage you to submit an application, even if you don’t feel you meet all of our requirements. We care more about working with people who want to help us craft artful, accessible experiences and pride themselves on being a joy to work with than ticking all the boxes.

We also strongly encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply – as a new studio, we’re committed to building a supportive, inclusive work environment from day one.

As a team, we seek to prioritise wellbeing as a core tenet of our development process. Launching a game can be a hugely rewarding experience, but it is just a passing moment in time. We believe that feeling happy, supported and capable in our everyday lives will allow us to do our best work, and create truly meaningful games.

We're currently hiring artists, designers, and programmers. You can view (and share) all of our open roles here.

Additional Information

Land & Sea is based in the South West of England, however, this position is remote. While we are open to applicants from around the world, we prefer to keep our team closer to home, so applicants from the United Kingdom and Europe are preferred. However, if you meet the role requirements and don’t mind ensuring your hours reasonably overlap with ours most days, please apply, wherever you are!

As mentioned above, we are open to a number of possibilities in terms of how this role could be structured. For the right candidate, we would consider part-time, contract and full-time opportunities depending on availability and other work commitments.

Land & Sea is a small team of creatives crafting meaningful, highly polished experiences. Our vision entails sustainable work practices including, realistic work hours, zero crunch, and a focus on developing games that add value to the lives of our players. We are an inclusive studio that seeks to provide a healthy and supportive work environment for our team.

While we work closely with Snowman — our partner on the Alto series — we are two distinct studios. In this role you will be directly working for Land & Sea, with regular collaboration with Snowman being built into the process of our continued support of the Alto series.

We’d love to hear from you if you are interested in this role! Please send us your expression of interest using our application form to ensure we can get back to you. We will follow up with individuals whose application and folio best fit our requirements as soon as possible.

Kind regards

– The Land & Sea Team

Our Titles

Our Next Project - Alongside the reveal of the studio in September of 2020 we shared a teaser image of our first original title unde the Land & Sea banner. While we are not quite ready to share more, we feel this title is best described as an accessible, coming-of-age folktale set against an ancient pastoral landscape.

Our goal is to ensure this title encapsulates the themes and values we seek to embody at Land & Sea. We can’t wait to show the world what we’ve been working on!
