Howdy! The Big Hops team is growing and we need help building and refining gameplay and tools.

We’re a very small team, each wearing many hats, and we’re hoping to find someone similarly multi-faceted. The ideal candidate has shipped at least one medium to large scale game project as a programmer and has worked on many parts including things like gameplay, physics, AI, UI, audio, editor tools, optimization, and more. If you have additional experience in another area (like design, tech art, or something else) that’s even better!

Responsibilities:

  • Write, debug, and modify code in an existing large codebase in C# (and a proprietary visual scripting format).
  • Support the design team by building new game features, tools, and extending existing systems.
  • Move between different programming focuses as needed (gameplay, physics, AI, UI, audio, tools, porting, etc).

Requirements:

  • 2+ years of professional programming experience.
  • Familiar with the Unity editor, prefab, level design, scripting, and custom editor workflows.
  • Experience developing for consoles, mobile, or VR platforms (especially porting and optimization).
  • At least 1 shipped commercial Unity game.
  • Great communication and collaboration skills.
  • Willing to learn new workflows, self-motivated, curious.
  • Detail-oriented, thoughtful, and aware of dependencies across systems and schedules

Nice to Have:

  • Interest in advanced movement games (Mario Odyssey, Mirror's Edge, etc) and emergent games (Spelunky, Zelda: BOTW).
  • Experience architecting systems to allow and encourage emergent gameplay.
  • Gameplay and systems design experience as a secondary skillset.
  • Love for frogs and or 3D platformers.
  • Diverse interests, especially outside video games.

Some Important Info:

  • Most of the team is based in Austin, TX but this role is very open to remote work.
  • This role is flexible time-wise, but Full-Time (40 hours / week) is preferred.
  • This role is contract, so doesn’t include salaried benefits.
  • Pay is monthly and not hourly (so we can better include sick days and vacation time).

About Luckshot Games:

Hey, Chris here. I started Luckshot Games back in 2015 to make innovative, high quality games filled to the brim with character and charm. Our first release Sausage Sports Club, a physics game about floppy animals playing sports, came out in 2018 on Switch and Steam.

Now that we’ve got the game making part down, we’re building a sustainable process that puts people first.

Our next project is Big Hops, a froggy platformer about deep locomotion and emergent systems. It’s still needs some time in the oven, but stay tuned.
