We’re Playdead, an independent game company based in the heart of Copenhagen, Denmark. We have made two critically acclaimed titles, LIMBO and INSIDE. Our current project is a 3rd-person science fiction adventure set in a remote corner of the universe.

We are seeking an experienced and passionate material and texture artist with strong artistic and technical skills to join our team in Copenhagen. You will be responsible for designing, enhancing and creating materials and textures for an immersive 3rd-person, open-world game. You will build and set up high quality materials in Unreal Engine and collaborate with the art team and other departments to prototype materials and ensure continuity with visual style, consideration on game performance and overcome technical restraints in the pipeline.

This role is located at the Playdead office in Copenhagen, Denmark.

What will you be doing?

  • Author and enhance Materials in Unreal Engine for the production team to use
  • Create high quality tiling textures for organic and structural surfaces
  • Unwrapping and texturing 3D assets
  • Establish material workflows and pipelines that will be used by the art team to always ensure high-fidelity and continuity with the visual quality of the textures and materials
  • Evaluate material and texture performance and provide creative or technical solutions to optimise and meet the project performance requirements
  • Collaborate with artists, designers and programmers to find creative and technical solutions to resolve difficulties on the project

Required Skills & Experience

  • You have had professional experience within 3D game production
  • A portfolio of work demonstrating an experienced level of artistic game development with a strong focus towards materials and textures
  • Experience with texture creation tools such as Substance Designer/Painter, ZBrush, 3D Modelling Tools & Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Experience creating and working with materials & textures in 3D Game Production using any major game engine
  • Great communication skills and ability to work effectively on shared projects

Desired skills & Experience

  • Experience with Unreal Engine
  • Skills with establishing workflows and pipelines for material and texture creation
  • Eye for quality control and detail
  • Ability to take direction, collaborate with other developers, and give/receive constructive feedback
