Full Time

Can you remember the joy of learning how to build new things as a child? The curiosity that drove you to tinker with your first computer? Did you ever wish your education felt more like a game, transporting you in a world of exploration, discovery and play? We definitely did, and that’s why we founded UMA.

UMA is an early-stage, London based, startup on a mission to create entertainment experiences that are intentional about what they teach kids. Today we are building a Multiplayer Thinky Sandbox game where kids develop mathematical reasoning and creative problem solving skills. Think of a Minecraft meets Factorio meets Scratch. We are not making a “traditional” educational game, we are re-imagining the future of games and learning - Jonathan Blow said it better than we ever could

It’s a very exciting time to join UMA; working with mathematicians, pedagogues and designers, we are defining the game’s core mechanics and systems. Every day, we explore innovative gameplay ideas and shape the future of learning. To achieve this ambitious mission, we are looking for an exceptionally talented and thoughtful game developer to join our journey.

In this position you will have a leading role in the development of our game’s system and mechanics, from prototyping through to shipping and beyond, while helping us build out our development team.

What you’ll be doing

  • Working closely with UMA’s co-founders, designers, and mathematicians to prototype and build bold new experiences
  • Rapid prototyping and experimenting with game design
  • Once in production, play a leading role in architecting and executing gameplay systems

What we are looking for

  • A self learner and team player; someone who is curious and always up for a challenge
  • 5+ years of experience in game development, from prototyping to release, across multiple platforms
  • Deep familiarity, experience and knowledge using Unity across the production pipeline
  • Experience building multiplayer games
  • Ability to work in a small team, and to thrive in a fast moving startup environment
  • Great communication skills and willingness to ask for help when needed
  • Deep understanding and interest in Mathematics

Big Plus

  • Experience developing and shipping indie games or working in high-growth startups
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics or equivalent work experience
  • Game design experience
  • Experience managing a team

What you’ll find

  • Lots of trust in your work and abilities
  • Freedom to think outside the box
  • A seat at the table in shaping the direction of the company and product
  • An interdisciplinary, diverse, safe, and modern work environment where we learn, teach and grow every day

We offer competitive compensation, including equity, flexibility to work from anywhere, and the option to start on a part-time basis.
