This role requires someone confident in developing original stories and pacey, authentic dialogue.

We’re looking for a freelance writer who will use their confident and wide-ranging understanding of narrative to work with us in developing an original story for our next project. This role requires someone with a passion for developing stories from the ground up, with a strong focus on characters, formative experiences, introspection and finding the motivators at the heart of who we are.

This role is ideal for someone who has proven experience collaborating successfully within creative teams, and of spearheading the development of a story from early stages through to final execution. It requires someone confident in shaping characters and expressing their identities through pacy, authentic dialogue. You have a passion for drama in all its forms, and are excited by the challenge of bringing a more reflective, character-focused story to a mobile gaming audience.

In terms of your commitment, we’re ideally looking for someone able to start as soon as possible for an initial workshop and deliverable, and who will be available to contract with us for various periods over the next twelve months. You will be managing your own time and working to deadlines rather than specific office hours, but we anticipate after the initial workshop this would be roughly 1-2 weeks work per month between April ‘21 and February ‘22.

Remote applicants welcome, but there may be a requirement to visit London on occasion for collaborative sessions. We anticipate however that this might only happen 1-3 during the next twelve months. (We are all currently working from home at the moment, and wouldn’t expect anyone to come into the studio until it is safe to do so).

As this project features a non-binary protagonist, we hugely encourage applications from non-binary writers.

  • Proven skill in writing and developing original narratives (rather than adapting pre-existing stories & characters)
  • Experience in scriptwriting (in any form) and writing dialogue
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within creative teams
  • Familiarity with writing narrative & dialogue for games/narrative design
  • Professional writing samples are required

  • Experience with the Turn based strategy, Roguelike or RPG genres
  • Familiarity with using Unity to test and iterate writing
  • Fluency in in languages outside of English

When submitting your application, please include answers to these questions in your cover letter:

  1. Tell us about a recent example from any scripted medium (games, film, audio drama etc) which you feel exemplifies good character-based drama, and why. (400 words max)
  2. Which type/genre of stories would you be excited to tell in the video game medium, which you haven’t yet seen fully explored? (200 words max)
