Hey there! Weathered Sweater is looking for short-term, contract help from an experienced Game Designer! Join us to co lead the prototyping and pre production process for Sea Monster Slayer (previously Castleboat), a project here at Weathered Sweater.

For this role we will likely be working through a brand new prototype heavily inspired by–but not bound to–our previous SMS and Castleboat prototypes. You will be working with the team to design, implement, playtest, and finalize systems, content, and levels.

Primarily, we will be focusing on the battle system design. Our main goals being to explore the depth of the system through rapid implementation of content.

As such, this role requires strong Unity engineering and debugging skills.

The Project:

Sea Monster Slayer is a deckbuilding hybrid between turn-based action-RPG and tower defense. Imagine an ungodly combination of Mega Man Battle Network, Plants vs Zombies, and Slay the Spire.

The game takes place within the Boatventure universe.

Important Details:

  • Timeline: 3-4 months
  • Compensation: Your freelance rate
  • Location: Though remote, we are mainly looking at candidates that can work in Eastern Time (ET).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work with the studio director to ideate, design, and document gameplay systems–particularly those associated with the battle system
  • Work with the development team to design content (units, abilities, enemies) and levels for one or two prototypes
  • Independently implement content into the game(s)
  • Design and implement UI/UX to fully evaluate the game’s design
  • Create placeholder assets for prototyping systems or implementing content. You will also have access to the assets from our previous prototypes.

  • Troubleshoot problems that arise and work with a programmer to resolve them
  • Keeping project management boards and documents up-to-date (Monday.com, Trello, Notion, Google Docs, etc)
  • Work as part of a team to consistently meet deadlines, produce documentation, and pitch against challenge criteria

Requirements:

  • Extremely familiar with the strategy and roguelite game genres, markets, and audiences on Steam and consoles
  • Examples of content and levels you designed in a strategy game. Extra points if it’s a game similar to Mega Man Battle Network, Plants vs Zombies, and/or Slay The Spire
  • Good sense of aesthetic (you have proven that you can make sure that things you work on and implement look and feel good)
  • Credited as lead or main game designer on at least one commercially released game with Unity (Steam, itch.io, console, etc)
  • Strong engineering skills and familiarity with working with various third party and in-house tools/API
  • Ability to make placeholder assets and animations
  • Intermediate to advanced understanding of Git and Source Control
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills
  • Experience working with small teams and picking up additional game dev tasks as necessary
