We’re looking for a Gameplay Programmer to handle physics-driven, rootin-tootin-shootin, ability-focused gameplay at Well Told Entertainment. You will take responsibility for ‘where the rubber meets the road’ on gameplay, working closely with other engineers and designers to solve development conundrums and bring the game to life.

This role requires a keen eye for dialing in a player action or game-to-player interaction to make the experience feel just right.

Our team is very collaborative and iterative, but you will own the quality and polish of game-feel in our titles. You will be contributing to testing and improving the gameplay experience, so being passionate about ‘finding the fun’ and building quality experiences is a must!

Job Description

  • Quickly create and iterate on prototypes and proof of concepts
  • Collaborate and work cohesively with members of different disciplines (Design, Production, Animation, QA, etc.)
  • Implement player-facing abilities, items, enemies.
  • Support game designers balancing requirements.
  • Polish gameplay features to a shippable level of polish and collaborates with other game-feel designers.
  • Define your own goals and tasks.
  • Directly contribute to the UX and design consistency of the game with scalable systems and code.

Individuals with the following background

  • 1-3+ years of professional experience and worked on at least one game that has shipped.
  • Familiarity with behavior trees, finite state machines, stateful patterns.
  • Experience working with game assets (shaders, materials, meshes, animations).
  • Experience working on physics-based game projects and 3D Math.
  • Experience with C++ and Blueprints.
  • You can take pointed, actionable feedback and polish features based on that feedback.
  • Experience owning systems but also supporting others with their day-to-day engineering needs.
  • Experience with VR game development.

Bonus Points

  • You have worked on integrating plugins to get to the target gameplay faster.
  • You have experience taking an entire mechanic from prototype to ship.
  • You have experience with rigging and very basic 3D software animation skills to test enemy designs quickly
  • You have experience with designing and implementing stateful AI in a 3D game.
  • Familiarity with Jenkins and CI processes.

*Currently, our studio is operating WFH remote – but full-time positions are preferred to be local to our studio in Orange County in the future. But we are open and will review remote candidates.
