Whatboy Games is an indie developer based in the UK but fully open to remote work. We launched our debut game, Trials of Fire, last year. We're now working on our 2nd title...and its looking (and playing) awesome!

The problem is we need a seriously good multiplayer programmer to make it genuinely world-class.

We're looking for someone who can take on all of the server-side / back-end code work and also fit into our small but hugely ambitious team and fill out the technical leadership of the studio as we grow.

Right now we're a team of 3. We all worked in senior roles together on all of the Batman: Arkham games at Rocksteady Studios so we know what it takes to make massively ambitious, super complex games...but we also know the toll that kind of development takes on us as humans.

Working with Whatboy is about making great games, but also making the time to take care of yourself and those close to you. We care much more about outcomes than hours worked. If you're working for a massive studio, doing great work but feeling like you could use more trust and support from your studio, maybe Whatboy is where you should be.

At Whatboy, here's what your day-to-day would look like:

  • Develop the network infrastructure required for an upcoming Multi-Player title, including:
  • Matchmaking.
  • Online lobbies.
  • Online profile integration.
  • Cloud server management.
  • Work closely with the Game Director to implement best in class online features.
  • Maintain and distribute builds for in-house and QA multi-player testing.

No doubt you've got extreme technical skills, but here's what we're hoping you've got specifically:

  • Good understanding in C/C++ and software architecture.
  • Proven experience in implementing network features in a released title.
  • A proven ability to design and implement re-usable systems inside a large code base.
  • Worked on at least 2 published titles.
  • Unreal Engine 4 experience an advantage.

We're a small team of 3, so welcoming a 4th person to Whatboy is a BIG deal for us. Here's the kind of qualities in a person that we're looking for:

  • A passion for playing and developing world class strategy games.
  • Be a positive, active, and contributing team member.
  • Must be a team player and know the importance of listening to others.
  • Able to work independently and prioritize your workload
  • Solid time management skills to work independently and remotely.
  • Good verbal and written interpersonal and communications skills.

Perks and Benefits

  • Private Health Insurance, including Dental & Mental Health cover
  • Generous pension contributions
  • Work from Home / Remote

Compensation package

  • Salary: Up to £85k
  • Share of royalties (if there are any, which we obviously all hope there will be)
  • Share options in Whatboy

Whatboy wants to be part of the solution with regard to under-representation in the games development community. We hugely value new perspectives, and we aspire to build an inclusive studio that embraces and encourages diversity.

If you feel like Whatboy could be the place for you, please get in touch with us.
