Hi! I’m developing Foxxy3D, a third-person 3D platformer with a spooky but playful fantasy setting.
The game follows Vixxen, a young vampire fox princess travelling across the kingdom of Vesperwyn after awakening far from home. Gameplay is focused heavily around movement, exploration and traversal, with abilities designed to chain naturally into one another as the player moves through the world.
Foxxy3D takes inspiration from games such as Sly Cooper, Banjo-Kazooie and other 3D platformers/action-adventure games, while aiming to create its own style of interconnected environments and traversal challenges.
The game is currently being developed in Unity, and I’m working on designing and improving the opening areas of the game.
What I’m looking for
I’m looking for an experienced Level Designer or Game Designer with strong level-design experience to work with me on a paid, 1-on-1 basis.
This is a little different from a typical freelance level-design position. I’m not primarily looking for somebody to disappear for a week and come back with a finished level.
Instead, I’d like to work collaboratively over Discord calls and screen sharing. We would look at the game together in Unity, discuss the problems with an area, sketch or block out possible solutions, and work through why certain layouts or gameplay ideas do or don’t work.
I’m also hoping to learn from the person I work with, so being able to explain your design process and reasoning is important to me.
What we’d be working on
The immediate focus is Stillgraves, the opening graveyard area of Foxxy3D. A rough layout and playable environment already exist, but I’d like help developing it into a much stronger opening level.
Some of the things I’d like to work on together include:
Over time, there may also be opportunities to help shape later areas of the game and the broader level-design philosophy of Foxxy3D.
Who I’d like to work with
Experience with 3D platformers, action-adventure games, traversal-heavy games or similar third-person games would be particularly valuable.
You don’t necessarily need to be an expert Unity programmer. The most important thing is having a strong understanding of spatial design, traversal, pacing, player psychology, exploration and gameplay flow.
I’m particularly interested in designers who enjoy taking an existing space and asking questions like: Where does the player naturally want to go? What are they looking at when they enter this area? What does this route teach them? How can we make getting from A to B enjoyable rather than simply functional?
I’m looking for somebody friendly and comfortable discussing ideas openly. I’m very happy to hear criticism of my existing designs — I want someone who can tell me when something isn’t working and help me understand why.
Working arrangement
This would be a remote, paid freelance position, working primarily through Discord voice calls and screen sharing.
I’d like to begin with a single 60–90 minute paid session so we can see whether we work well together. If it’s a good fit, I’d be very interested in continuing with regular sessions as development progresses.
The schedule can be fairly flexible, and I’m open to discussing your normal hourly rate.
How to apply
If you’re interested, please send me a short introduction along with your portfolio, examples of levels you’ve designed, relevant shipped/personal projects, or anything else that demonstrates your level-design experience.
I’d also love to hear a little about the kinds of games you’ve worked on, whether you have experience with 3D platformers or traversal-heavy games, your hourly rate, and your availability.
Thanks for reading! :)
