San Francisco, CA

Elsewhere is hiring a Gameplay and Network Engineer to work with us on our upcoming live service roguelike game. Our game captures the aesthetic and soul of indie games, the replayability and depth of roguelikes, and the ambition to become a forever game that reaches millions of players.

As our Gameplay and Network Engineer, you’ll both contribute to core gameplay while owning the architecture and implementation of our networking stack. You’ll also have real input on game design.

Note that our team works in-person out of a beautiful space in San Francisco, CA. Relocation assistance is available.

Your Profile

  • You’re experienced. You have at least three years of experience working on networked multiplayer games, and have shipped at least one game.
  • You understand the problems inherent in building a server-authoritative networked multiplayer game. You grok things like rollback netcode and client-side prediction. You know when to roll your own netcode and also have strong opinions about existing products on the market.
  • You’re knowledgable about game engines. You’ve worked deeply with Godot, or you’re excited to learn it. You also some have experience with Unreal, Unity, or another game engine. You’re fluent in a modern programming language like C#, C++, or TypeScript.
  • You bring a founder’s mindset to game development. That means you’re comfortable with ambiguity. Being part of a founding team excites you. You’re ready to roll up your sleeves and you’re hungry.
  • You love games. You’re well-versed in everything from modern indie and AAA hits to the old school pioneers that inspired them.
  • You like to ship. You’re eager to share messy prototypes and half-baked ideas, both internally and with external playtesters.
  • You have specialist experience in network engineering, but you’re also eager to contribute in other areas, like gameplay engineering, building tools, and brainstorming with art and design colleagues.
  • You’re ambitious. You want to build something with massive reach that players are going to absolutely love. You want to push the envelope of games as a medium.
  • You’re collaborative. You’re excited to work closely our founder, game artists, game engineer, our community, and more.

You might also have:

  • Experience working on a small team, ideally in a startup environment.
  • Experience and knowledge of DevOps, both of tools like Kubernetes and platforms like AWS or Azure.

We offer:

  • Market salary and generous equity compensation.
  • Relocation assistance (San Francisco Bay Area).
  • Top-tier benefits, including medical, vision, and dental insurance.
  • Unlimited PTO (with an enforced minimum).
  • A small, tight-knit team of humble and hard-working gaming weirdos. :)

This is a rare opportunity to directly shape a game with massive potential from its earliest stages. If that sounds exciting, we’d absolutely love to hear from you, regardless of whether you meet exact requirements.
