We are seeking a talented and imaginative puzzle designer to join our team creating a 2D iOS puzzle game. The ideal candidate will have a knack for creating thought-provoking puzzles quickly and efficiently (about 25 puzzles per week minimum). You will be responsible for designing innovative puzzles that engage players, encouraging them to think critically. These puzzles should also increase in difficulty over time and intelligently re-use various puzzle mechanics.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop unique puzzles that align with the game’s theme and narrative.
  • Introduce new puzzle mechanics.
  • Collaborate programmer to ensure puzzles are seamlessly integrated into the game.
  • Create detailed puzzle documentation, including diagrams and gameplay logic.
  • Playtest and refine puzzles based on feedback to ensure they are challenging yet accessible.
  • Balance puzzle difficulty to cater to a wide range of player abilities.
  • Stay updated on industry trends and emerging technologies to bring fresh ideas to the team.

 

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience designing puzzles for video games, with a portfolio showcasing relevant work.
  • Strong understanding of game design principles and player psychology.
  • Proficiency in puzzle design tools and software (e.g., Unity, Photoshop, or similar).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and creative thinking.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.
  • Passion for puzzle games and a deep understanding of what makes them engaging.

 

Preferred Skills:

  • Have shipped a real game.
  • Background in a related field such as mathematics, logic, or visual arts.

For bonus points, design a 2D puzzle using these constraints:

In a 6x6 grid puzzle, '#' symbols represent walls, 'O' symbols represent orbs that must be collected, 'S' marks the starting point, and 'E' indicates the endpoint. Create a path from 'S' to 'E' that collects all orbs and adheres to the rule of not retracing any steps. Here is an example grid:
