We’re looking for a Narrative Designer to help shape the narrative foundation of our turn-based JRPG and take ownership of how story, worldbuilding, and narrative systems come together across the game.

We’re looking for someone who can own the game’s narrative design, helping define how story is delivered through characters, progression, levels, systems, cutscenes, and environmental content.

You will work closely with the Creative Director, Game Designers, and Level Designers to build a cohesive narrative experience that fits the structure, tone, and production realities of the project. That includes helping define the world, organizing and maintaining narrative documentation, and designing the features and pipelines that support storytelling in the game. We’re a small team, so this role requires both creative vision and practical execution. We need someone who can think at the high level, but also document clearly, structure content, and help turn narrative ideas into production-ready design.

What You’ll Do

  • Take ownership of the game’s narrative design, helping shape how story is expressed across the full player experience
  • Organize, maintain, and improve the project’s narrative documentation, ensuring it stays clear, updated, and useful for the team
  • Design and document narrative-related systems and features, such as dialogue structures, cutscene flows, narrative collectibles, in-world storytelling, and other content delivery methods
  • Collaborate closely with the Level Designer to establish the world, define environmental storytelling opportunities, and support the narrative use of levels and spaces
  • Work with Game Design to ensure narrative features and guidelines are aligned with gameplay systems, progression, and production scope
  • Help define narrative content pipelines, dependencies, and implementation needs so narrative work can be produced consistently
  • Support the development of characters, worldbuilding, story structure, and emotional beats throughout the game
  • Write dialogue, in-world text, and narrative content when needed, or help define tone, voice, and narrative direction for future writing work
  • Communicate progress clearly and proactively with the team, surfacing risks, needs, and decisions early

What We’re Looking For

  • Strong sense of ownership, with the ability to drive and structure the narrative of the project with minimal hand-holding alongside the Creative Director
  • Proven ability to design narrative for games beyond writing alone, including systems, content structures, documentation, and player-facing delivery
  • Excellent organizational skills and the discipline to keep narrative documentation clear, updated, and production-friendly
  • Strong collaboration skills and comfort working across design disciplines, especially with Game Design and Level Design
  • Good understanding of how narrative and gameplay support each other in a linear, structured game
  • Strong English communication skills, especially for documentation, tone definition, and narrative content development
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to create or guide dialogue, character voice, and emotional tone
  • Awareness of production realities, scope constraints, and the importance of building narrative solutions that are achievable for a small team
  • Reliability, proactivity, and clear communication around progress, blockers, and priorities

Bonus Points For

  • Experience working on JRPGs, narrative-heavy RPGs, or other story-driven games
  • Experience designing or implementing dialogue, cutscene, quest, or narrative event pipelines
  • Familiarity with Unreal, Unity and engine hands-on approach
  • Experience with localization-friendly writing and documentation practices
  • Experience working with Voice Acting pipelines
  • Experience helping establish worldbuilding in collaboration with level or world design
