Panic is looking to hire a short-term sensitivity reader for one of our upcoming titles! While we do not require any game writing experience for this job, we are looking for someone with specific insights in order to cover any blindspots that we may have. Please read on for more information on the title, and what we are looking for.

Project Description

This title is a fantasy game featuring several invented Indigenous cultures in a colonial era. We are looking for a person (or multiple people) to complete a sensitivity reading of the script to assess for any unintentionally harmful language, misrepresentations, or places that we could use some additional culturalizations, and offer recommendations for improvements should these weaknesses be found. The cultures represented are primarily representative of central and south America, as well as north African, so any specific connection to these demographics would be a plus.

Compensation

This is a paid opportunity - we can offer an introductory rate of $500 for an initial assessment of the work not to exceed 10 hours of labor, and are willing to negotiate rates for the full scope.

To Apply

If you are interested in this, please respond with your answers to the following questions, as well as your short-term availability to start. We’re looking to get this work done soon, therefore someone who can work near full-time in the short term would be the ideal candidate.

Questions:

  1. Can you tell us your connection to Indigenous culture, particularly of Central and South America and/or Northern Africa?
  2. Can you explain some aspects that you look for to see if something is inclusive or non-harmful to indigenous cultures?
About
Panic

Located in beautiful, rainy, extremely beautiful Portland, Oregon, we're an independent software company with about 25 employees and a lot going on. Founded in 1997 as a fully self-funded, independent, and sustainable business, our award-winning macOS and iOS apps are loved by users around the world.

Our product philosophy: to create absolute best-of-class applications and tools that people need to use every day, and to experiment with new and uncertain ideas that can generate inspiration. Balancing both keeps our work interesting.

Today, our team (and often our industry) is missing the voices of a lot of people who could make our wonderful apps even better. We want that to change. We want to broaden our team to include folks whose diverse backgrounds and experiences will inspire and guide our products to new heights. We highly encourage people from traditionally underrepresented groups to apply for our open positions. We work hard to foster an environment at Panic that empowers individuality, empathy, and innovation, and we’re looking forward to what you’ll bring to the table.

Enter the breathtakingly beautiful world of Arco (by Franek, Max Cahill, Bibiki, Fáyer), a unique tactical action game where your decisions shape the story. Journey through lush forests, sweeping plains, and scorching deserts as you guide four unlikely heroes in their vendetta against the Red Company. Battle warriors of different nations, fend off greedy colonizers, and slay monstrous creatures as you voyage across this enchanted land. Change your fate, one move at a time.

Thank Goodness You're Here! (by Coal Supper) is an absurd comedy slapformer set in the bizarre Northern English town of Barnsworth. As a traveling salesman, take the time to see the sights and meet the locals, who are very eager to give you a series of increasingly odd jobs...

Untitled Goose Game (by House House) is a slapstick-stealth-sandbox, where you are a goose let loose on an unsuspecting village. Make your way around town, from peoples' back gardens to the high street shops to the village green, setting up pranks, stealing hats, honking a lot, and generally ruining everyone’s day.

đź‘‹ Hi! Nate from Work With Indies here. You already know Panic works with the best developers on incredible, artistic, original, and often quirky games (also, a handheld game console with a crank!?).

The team also happens to be full of some of the funniest, kindest, and most talented people that you will meet. Like IRL BFFs. I'd consider interviewing just to hang with them for a few hours. A+++ would recommend.
