We are looking for a Lead 2D Artist to unify the visual style of our JRPG project in Unity 6.

This remote short-term role requires someone who can:

  • Review and rework our current assets, developing a cohesive visual language. This may involve emulating the style of the existing assets.
  • Produce reference assets for characters and monsters in different instances (portrait/sprite/chibi sprite) and guidelines for their production.
  • Define the visual style of the environments and UI.
  • Implement art assets in-engine (animations, UI layouts, etc.) and propose solutions for the project-specific graphic needs (layering, movement, etc.)

It is a contract position expected to last two months with compensation of $600-750 per week and can be done part-time. Upon completion, you can request the next contract and contribute to the production of the assets you will have helped design.

If you are interested in the project but are worried about any of these details, please note that in your application: we value quality, and can negotiate over everything else.

What project

Our RPG explores the changes that come with entering a university: passing into adult life and having to define oneself while living through the larger changes in the world and community. How will the player navigate the all-too-rigid categories of academic subject and year, gender and archetype, declared beliefs and performative actions?

We want to capture this experience into a flamboyant, loud visual style. Think Persona (esp. 2 & 5), Suprematism in art, bold Bauhaus typography, inky spills and clouds for the supernatural. All that, set in the gloomy realm of UK circa 2018 with subdued, Surrealist and Impressionist fantasy elements.

(See a style preview and some gameplay descriptions here:  www.sevakhusid.games/ago8-ju1-san1-anil1ix )

The project has completed an early production phase: we know our core mechanics and story, our UI is in a good spot, and we have strong concept art for the main characters and locations. Now we need consistent and reproducible game assets.

Skills and requirements

  • At least 2-5 years of experience making art for games (jam entries count).
  • Even better if you have led an art team and have experience establishing art production or outsourcing pipelines.
  • Bonus 1: Experience working in Unity.
  • Bonus 2: Experience doing animation in games, especially fighting or platformer.

To apply:

Please apply by filling out the Google form along with:

  • Links to your resume and portfolio.
  • Link to a short supporting document.
  • Please, attach three pieces of your art that seem particularly relevant to this project and give a short summary of why (just a couple sentences). What makes you proud of them? Why do they come to mind when thinking about this game?
