TangleMindGames is a small indie studio developing an auto-battler game combining deep hero customization, deck-building, and roguelite gameplay.

After several years of development, the core game is well established and much of the artwork is already in place. Because the art has been created by multiple artists over time, we're now looking for a hands-on Lead Game Artist to strengthen the game's visual direction, bring greater consistency across the existing artwork, and continue creating production art.

This is primarily a hands-on production role with visual leadership responsibilities. Your strongest discipline should be stylized 3D game art, along with practical experience working with 3D character animation. Breadth across 2D and UI art is valuable, but we don't expect equal expertise in every discipline.

Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain a cohesive visual direction for the game
  • Create stylized 3D environments, props, and other production assets
  • Adjust, polish, and adapt existing 3D character rigs and animations for gameplay needs
  • Review existing artwork and determine what should be retained, improved, or replaced
  • Establish practical style guides, visual standards, and production guidelines for future content
  • Review and provide visual direction to freelance/external artists when needed
  • Work directly with the developer/designer to turn gameplay and design requirements into effective visual solutions
  • Help maintain visual consistency as new characters, skins, environments, and cosmetic content are developed

Secondary / As Needed

  • Create or polish 2D game artwork
  • Create or improve UI artwork and visual elements
  • Support character and skin development
  • Help evaluate and integrate artwork produced by external artists

What We're Looking For

Experience with Unity and shipped game titles is a strong plus.

We are not looking for someone who is a specialist in every artistic discipline. We're looking for a strong, versatile game artist who can take ownership of visual quality, make good production decisions, and help establish a consistent artistic foundation for the game.

Team & Working Style

TangleMindGames is a very small, fully remote indie studio.

You'll work directly with the game's developer/designer and help provide visual guidance to external artists or freelancers when additional production support is needed.

Because the team is small, this role offers substantial creative ownership and direct influence over how the game ultimately looks and feels.

About the Role

  • Full-time contract, approximately 40 hours per week
  • Approximately 1-year initial contract
  • Fully remote
  • Open to candidates internationally
  • Candidates should be comfortable communicating professionally in English
  • Opportunity to transition into a long-term/full-time role if the game and working relationship develop well

Compensation

For US-based candidates, expected contract compensation is approximately $80,000-$130,000 USD annualized, depending on experience and qualifications.

For candidates outside the United States, compensation will be adjusted based on the local market, along with experience, qualifications, and scope of responsibilities.

Applying

Apply via our contact form with:

  • Portfolio
  • Brief explanation of your contribution to relevant portfolio pieces or shipped games
  • Location and time zone
  • Availability / potential start date
  • Compensation expectations

We're particularly interested in seeing:

  • Stylized 3D environments and props
  • Examples showing strong visual consistency and artistic judgment
  • Game-ready production work rather than only presentation renders
  • Examples of 3D character animation work or animation adjustments
  • Relevant 2D or UI work, if available

Our hiring process will be lightweight: Portfolio review -> short conversation -> small paid art test -> final conversation / offer

The paid test will be clearly scoped and time-boxed. Its purpose is to evaluate visual judgment, production quality, workflow, communication, and ability to work within the game's existing visual direction.
