We're seeking an experienced Unity Gameplay Developer to join The Kobold Collective.
In this role, you'll build core gameplay systems and features that bring our game to life. You'll work closely with designers, artists, and other engineers to implement mechanics, player interactions, AI, UI, and game systems while ensuring excellent performance and maintainable code.
The ideal candidate enjoys solving gameplay challenges, writing clean architecture, and turning game design into polished player experiences.
This is a hybrid role. The chosen candidate will work from our office location in Toronto, Ontario, Canada at least three days per week to help foster collaboration with designers, artists, and developers, with the option to work remotely or in-office for the remainder of the work week.
Objectives of the Role
- Develop gameplay systems and mechanics in Unity using C#
- Translate game design documents into robust, scalable gameplay code
- Build player controls, interactions, progression systems, UI, and game logic
- Implement gameplay state management
- Optimise gameplay performance and memory usage
- Debug gameplay issues and improve stability
- Collaborate closely with designers and artists throughout development
- Maintain clean, maintainable, well-documented code
Responsibilities
- Implement gameplay features from design specifications
- Develop player controllers, inventory systems, combat, progression, and interactions
- Build UI functionality and integrate menus using Unity UI
- Develop AI behaviours and gameplay scripting
- Integrate animations, audio, VFX, and art assets
- Optimise gameplay systems for smooth frame rates
- Profile and fix bugs and performance bottlenecks
- Integrate third-party SDKs when required
- Participate in code reviews and technical planning
- Stay up to date with Unity best practices and new engine features
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 2+ years developing games with Unity
- Strong C# programming skills
- Experience building gameplay systems in Unity
- Good understanding of object-oriented programming and software architecture
- Experience working with animation systems and Unity UI
- Experience debugging and profiling Unity projects
- Comfortable collaborating with designers and artists
- Experience using Git or other version control systems
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
Preferred Skills
- Experience shipping a commercial Unity title
- Experience with Scriptable Objects and data-driven architecture
- Experience with Addressables and Asset Bundles
- Knowledge of Unity's rendering pipelines (URP/HDRP)
- Unity Certification
