We’re The Rhythm Company, an independent game studio creating the next generation of rhythm games. We’re looking for a highly skilled freelance 2D artist to support early development on our stylized rhythm-game project. Please note that this role requires very specific stylistic alignment.

We need an artist who can create clean, production-ready 2D concepts (characters and/or props) that follows a specific art direction and focuses on design. This role is not exploratory, you must already work in a style similar and be able to design around already decided themes or ideas.

We need clear, functional reference sheets and designs intended for use in 3D modeling. Work should clearly communicate form, structure, and key details. Designs sheets will typically include detailed black-and-white lineart with flat coloring. Decal sheets will be colored. Potential for work to later encompass partially or fully rendered illustrations.

Flexible hours and steady collaboration as needed.

Scope

The exact scope of assets will be determined as necessary or upon request. Currently we anticipate work for the following assets:

  • 5-8 Characters
  • 2 Small environments (with supporting detail sheets)
  • Prop sheets
  • Decal sheets

We will begin by having a character designed as a first step. More work to follow for the right candidate.

Start

We hope to have this position filled asap.

Deadlines

This engagement will be structured as a fixed-scope, milestone-based contract. Each milestone will be assigned with a defined deadline and may be completed earlier if desired, but no later than the agreed-upon due date.

Style expectations:

The 3D art style we’re aiming for is semi-stylized with exaggerated realism. Materials will primarily be PBR-based, supported by hand-painted textures to add character and visual interest. Think energy, noise, rich texture, and a sense of motion throughout the design.

Below are reference images to help clarify the visual direction and set expectations for the overall style.

Hard Requirements (Please read before applying)

Applications that do not meet all of the following requirements will not be reviewed.

  1. A portfolio that has at least 3 polished and finished character sheets. The following do not count:
    1. Unfinished sketches
    2. Studies
    3. AI-generated images
    4. Old student work unless it is production-ready quality
  2. Ability to deliver layered, organized files in Adobe Photoshop
  3. Ability to take direction through text and work asynchronously while hitting deadlines
  4. All communication is typically through email or discord
  5. A freelance & IP assignment contract will be provided and must be signed before work begins.

Compensation

Payments will be made via ACH (US only) or wire transfer (International). Rates are based on our current budget, with some flexibility depending on experience and project needs.

  1. Characters: $300-$400 per character
  2. Environment design: $300-$500 per environment
  3. Prop sheets: $200-$300
  4. Decal sheets: $100-$150

To Apply

  1. Email your portfolio (ArtStation preferred) with the subject line: Concept Artist Application - Your Name

Applicants who submit unpolished work, unrelated styles, or incomplete portfolios will not be considered.

Any email without the proper subject line will be filtered out and not be considered.

A Note on Replies

We are a small studio, and I sincerely apologize in advance if I’m unable to respond promptly to everyone. I will try to review and reply as timely as possible, but it may take a little while.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

About
The Rhythm Company

Founded in 2025, we are a small & entirely remote game studio dedicated to building next generation rhythm games. We got our start modding and creating tools/content for the classic Guitar Hero and Rock Band games, now we're continuing that legacy by starting our own studio.

We are entirely self-funded and intend on keeping it that way by building a sustainable and community-focused studio.
