Hello from The Studio That!

We’re a small UK indie studio working on our debut game, and we’re looking for an experienced Technical Artist to work alongside our creative director and rendering technician to prototype brushwork shaders and rendering techniques. This is a short term flexible part-time freelance role running until March 26.

ABOUT THE GAME

The game is a dark herbalist simulator set in 1500s rural England. The player must survive plagues and famine while navigating village suspicion as witchcraft hysteria begins to spread. The art direction draws from early Renaissance painting, with bright unmodulated colours, tight brushwork, and deliberately off-kilter perspectives. The world is built in 3D and is navigated through fixed-perspective views.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop and prototype shader techniques that achieve a 16th century painting aesthetic
  • Collaborate on material implementation and iteration, working from creative briefs and reference materials
  • Independently problem-solve visual challenges and propose shader-based solutions
  • Support the overall visual prototyping phase to establish the game's look and feel

REQUIREMENTS

  • 6+ years of professional experience as a Tech Artist or related role
  • Demonstrable portfolio showing technical art projects with strong visual direction
  • Proficiency with Unity, especially URP (Universal Render Pipeline)
  • Proven experience developing shaders in ShaderGraph
  • UK tax residency and ability to invoice as a UK-based freelancer

NICE TO HAVE

  • Experience with historical art references or stylistically-constrained projects
  • Background in environment modelling and texturing
  • Previous experience working in small indie teams

RESTRICTIONS

This is a fully remote position, but unfortunately due to funding restrictions we can only consider applicants living and paying tax in the UK.

SALARY

Day rate: ~£300, depending on experience.

Around 2-3 days a week, ~8 day trial period, expanding to approx. 20 to 30 days in total

HOW TO APPLY

Please click the apply button and complete the application form. Applications must include a portfolio or ArtStation link; unfortunately, we cannot consider applications without demonstrable work samples.

We’re committed to hiring diversely. Even if you don’t feel you meet every skill requirement, or have restrictions around how you can work - please still apply. We’d love to hear from you and we are open to shaping the role around the right person.
