Job Posting: 3D Animator/Rigger 

Location: Montréal, Quebec, Canada (Hybrid – 2 days per week in the office)

Salary Range: CAD $65,000 – $85,000 per year

Reports to: Art Director

Clever Plays is looking for a talented 3D Animator / Rigger to join our team and help bring memorable characters and worlds to life. You will be responsible for all aspects of character animation and rigging, from initial creation to implementation and integration in Unity.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working in a collaborative indie environment, has strong animation fundamentals, and is excited to contribute beyond a single discipline when needed.

Responsibilities

Animation & Rigging (75%)

• Understand gameplay and design intentions to create engaging, expressive, and high-quality character animations.
• Build rigs that provide a full range of motion with logical, efficient, and well-designed control systems.
• Create and polish animations for a variety of characters and situations.
• Integrate animations into Unity using internal studio tools and workflows.
• Take ownership of character animation quality and contribute to the overall player experience.
• Animate a broad range of subjects, from semi-realistic human movement to creatures, monsters, and fantastical machines.

Art Team Support (15%)

• Collaborate with the art team on a variety of visual production tasks.
• Assist with the creation and integration of assets such as FX, textures, meshes, and marketing materials when needed.
• Contribute to maintaining visual consistency and quality across the project.

Pipeline Development (10%)

• Help define, improve, and maintain animation and rigging workflows.
• Contribute to pipeline documentation and process improvements.
• Promote best practices and support knowledge sharing within the team.

Qualifications

Required

• Degree or diploma in Visual Arts, Animation, Game Art, or a related field.
• 3+ years of professional experience in video games, film, animation, entertainment, or a related industry.
• Experience contributing to at least one shipped or completed production.
• Strong proficiency with Blender or equivalent 3D software.
• Experience with Unity, particularly its animation systems, or another modern game engine.
• Strong understanding of animation principles, including weight, timing, physicality, and believable movement.
• Solid understanding of rigging concepts and animation tools.

Nice to Have

• Generalist 3D skills such as modeling, lighting, VFX, texturing, or technical art.
• Experience working in small or independent game development teams.
