Elsewhere is hiring an Generative AI Game Developer, because the way we make games has completely changed, and possibility space for the kind of games we can make has never been bigger or more exciting.

We’re a venture-backed indie studio working on a surreal card game set inside your own dreaming mind. We aim for the project to combine the soul of a stellar indie title with the strategic depth and replayability of collective card games and deckbuilding roguelikes, ultimately becoming a forever-game that reaches millions of players.

In this role, you’ll contribute to game design, product management, and software engineering. You’ll dream up and balance new game mechanics, contribute actual gameplay code via coding agents, and constantly find clever new ways to enhance our game using generative AI.

This is a contract, part-time position. Work will begin with paid trial projects. Full-time employment (with generous equity and benefits) is a possibility for exceptional candidates.

Qualifications

  • You love video games and the culture surrounding them deeply. You’ve played more games than you can count across genres. Bonus points if you’re a fan of role-playing or deckbuilding games.
  • You've made a game using coding agents like Claude Code or Codex and can link to live demos of impressive demos. Your AI-made games aren’t one-shots or “slop”, they’re real side projects you’ve poured effort into.
  • You have software engineering experience (inside or outside of games). You’ve shipped code on a team (pre-AI) and know the fundamentals of programming, databases, version control, etc.
  • You’re enthusiastic and optimistic about the ways the latest generative AI technologies can augment game production and magnify creative talent. You have strong opinions about which AI models, harnesses, approaches, and tools are the most helpful. You follow AI news and AI Twitter religiously, and are always the first to try out the latest model.
  • You're ambitious. You want to be an early part of something big. Something with massive potential that players are going to absolutely love. You want to work with a game studio that pushes the envelope of games as a medium.
  • You're collaborative. You're excited to work closely with our community and teammates to create a unified vision.
  • You’re not a jerk. You understand that generative AI is controversial in creative spaces, and can disagree respectfully.

Bonus Points For:

  • Experience contributing game design for a shipped title or game mod.
  • Love for (and participation in) a fandom of any kind.
  • Experience working on a small team, ideally in a startup environment.
  • Being based in San Francisco, CA.
About
Elsewhere

We are a new kind of video game studio based in San Francisco emboldened by the desire to rethink the industry. We are idealistic and ambitious. We believe that Artificial Intelligence is a normal technology. We build games that use generative AI because we want to push the future in a humanistic, positive direction. We reject the idea that tech companies must push a dystopian vision to be profitable. The future of games comes from the tight collaboration between technologists and creatives.

Previously, we were working on a roguelike. Now we are working on something new.
