We're an indie game developer working on a pirate themed 2D roguelike strategy, turn-based game centered around ships, cannons, and exploring the seas. The player manages a shipyard, recruits crews, builds cannons, and battles rival ships in tactical combat. We're looking for a talented Senior 2D Artist to help bring the game’s world to life by defining its art direction, visual identity, and overall aesthetic direction, using a stylized art style.
About the Game
Our current project is a pirate-themed 2D roguelike strategy game built on Unity where players command multi-deck ships, recruit unique crew, and unleash tactical cannon battles on the high seas. Inspired by games like Monster Train and Slay the Spire, it blends turn-based tactical combat with the unpredictability of roguelike exploration.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate directly with the designer to establish the art direction for the entire game (UI, environments, ships, cannons, characters).
- Create concept art and mood boards to solidify the visual style.
- Produce high-quality 2D assets, including:
- Ships, cannons, and crew characters.
- Shop interiors and items.
- Environments (sea, docks, islands, etc.).
- UI/UX elements that match the chosen style.
- Ensure consistency across all visual assets.
- Provide guidance for scalable asset creation (e.g., modular ship pieces, upgrade visuals).
Requirements
- Proven experience as a 2D Artist in games (shipped titles a plus).
- Strong portfolio demonstrating both stylization and practical game-ready art.
- Ability to set and maintain a cohesive art direction.
- General knowledge of UI/UX.
- Comfort working in an indie environment (self-directed, collaborative, resourceful).
- Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
Bonus Points
- Familiarity with roguelike/strategy games or naval themes.
- Familiarity with the Unity game engine.
Why Join?
- You love cannons!
- The game is fully functional and ready for an art pass, which means you’ll see your work in action immediately.
- Creative freedom to help shape the look and feel of the entire game.
- Flexible, remote-friendly collaboration.
- Paid position (scope and rate negotiable depending on experience).
Why this might not be good fit for you
- You’re not comfortable being in charge of defining the art style.
- You prefer projects with a fully established visual direction from day one.
- Remote collaboration and self-management are difficult for you.
Job Information
- Job Type: Freelance/Contract.
- Duration: 4 months, with possibility of extension.
- Location: Remote (team based in Saudi GMT+3).
