Important Details:

  • Full-Time or Part-time - 16 month freelance contract.
  • Remote - Working from Home flexibly around GMT/BST hours plus ideally meeting for co-working one day a month in London.
  • Due to the nature of our funding we can ONLY hire people who reside at a UK address. Please don’t apply if you don’t live in the UK.

 

Sketchbook Games are looking for a highly creative and talented Technical Game Designer who is experienced with the Unreal Engine and can rapidly design, prototype and implement mechanics and concepts. We want you to help us make games that have something to say and can make a positive difference for our players' lives. We’re a small team so skills in any other discipline are a great bonus.

 

Must have:

  • Design experience of shipping one, or ideally more, commercial games

We would like you to:

  • Prototype rapidly in Unreal Engine 5 and Blueprint: Demonstrate advanced skills in quickly creating and iterating on game mechanics and concepts.
  • Be kind, respectful, and a great communicator who works well with others and is flexible, self-motivated and open minded.
  • Have professional game design experience designing areas such as gameplay, levels, puzzles, systems and player experience: a bonus if from non-violent/ first person games!
  • Own the technical design process: High autonomy and accountability in creating, developing and refining game features and solutions.
  • Exhibit excellent problem-solving skills to create innovative technical/ creative solutions.
  • Conduct and analyse playtests: Learn from the feedback, and iterate to improve game mechanics and player experience.
  • Collaborate with our creative director: Work closely to flesh out design details, support high-level concepts, and help ensure the game looks and plays beautifully.
  • Create clean and logical blueprints that are easily readable and usable by others. 
  • Be able to make decisions considering many factors (such as game design, business models and player archetypes) and core principles (e.g. low skill floor, engaging players, elegance/simplicity, having a positive impact).

Sketchbook Games

Sketchbook Games are a small independent studio based on the Suffolk/ Essex border. Our debut game, Lost Words: Beyond the Page is available on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Switch and mobile, featuring a story written by renowned games writer Rhianna Pratchett and an orchestral soundtrack by BAFTA nominated composer David Housden.

We are currently working on a new first person game aiming to improve our player’s mental health through a variety of mindfulness techniques and meditations combined with an engaging narrative and puzzles. There’s a reference trailer to give you an idea of the aesthetic we’re aiming for here.
