GameName LLC is hiring a Game Designer to help shape the gameplay, pacing, and level design for an unannounced 3D action-horror-comedy game with roguelike elements and networked multiplayer.
You'll work directly with the Creative Director and Lead Unity Developer to plan/prototype level layouts, structure progression, and design fun, scary, and weird experiences that hold up over repeated runs.
This is a part-time, remote role. It would be a great fit for designers early in their careers with solid relevant experience to showcase, or more experienced candidates looking for a supplemental income. You'll be collaborating closely with a small team while learning how to deliver high-impact design work in a fast-moving indie environment.
Responsibilities
- Design and sketch compelling level ideas, layouts, and player flows
- Help define the games core loop, progression, pacing, and enemy encounters
- Collaborate with the Creative Director and developers to prototype and iterate on levels
- Contribute ideas to support procedural generation and modular level construction
- Document design ideas clearly and provide feedback on gameplay implementation
- Playtest regularly and make recommendations based on gameplay feel and flow
- Adjust designs flexibly based on feedback and production constraints
Qualifications
- Experience designing levels, gameplay systems, or encounters for 3D
- Solid grasp of game design fundamentals, including pacing, player feedback, and replayability
- Must be able to demonstrate design thinking through sketches, whiteboxes, design docs, or other supporting materials alongside a strong portfolio piece
- Familiarity with horror, comedy, and action game mechanics or genres
- Passion for player-centric design, experimentation, and iteration
- Strong communication and collaboration skills in a remote team environment
(Beginner-level candidates are welcome if they meet the above criteria and can clearly explain their creative and design process.
Bonus Points
- Experience with procedural or modular level design
- Knowledge of roguelikes, horror-comedy, or PvE multiplayer game design
- Hands-on experience with Unity, Unreal, or other 3D game engines
- Broad game design knowledge/experience in topics like enemy behavior, trap/puzzle design, or player progression systems.
- Unity engine experience (non-programming stuff, like blocking out level concepts or using designer-friendly editor tools).
Contract Terms
- Type: Independent Contractor Agreement (ICA)
- Hours: Part-Time (10-20 hrs/week), flexible schedule
- Rate: $20-35/hr USD, depending on experience, skills, and location
- Trial Period: Initial one month evaluation phase

Perks & Culture
- Remote work with flexible scheduling
- Fun, weird project with lots of room for experimentation and learning
